The Max Planck Society (MPG) is not only Germany’s most successful research organization, but with currently 31 Nobel Prize winners, it is also one of the best and most renowned research institutions worldwide.
The MPG currently comprises 84 institutes and facilities that conduct basic research in the natural sciences, life sciences, humanities, and social sciences for the benefit of society. “Recognition must precede application” – in line with this quote from Max Planck, the institutes are involved in research areas that are particularly innovative and require special financial or time investments. Their goal is to find answers to promising scientific questions.
The Cooperative Brain Imaging Center (CoBIC) is a research facility jointly operated by Goethe University, the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, and the ESI, all located in Frankfurt.
It has it’s focus on imaging neuroscience. Scientists have access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure that can be used to investigate the cerebral basis of language, memory, information processing, and music. At the same time, the translational projects also improve our understanding of neurological and psychiatric disorders. An important goal is to ensure that patients can quickly benefit from the findings.
Frankfurt am Main is an important scientific hub. In order to provide mutual institutional support within the region and solve problems that are best tackled by a group of politically influential players, several institutions have joined forces to form the Frankfurt Alliance. These include Goethe University, the Max Planck Society, Fraunhofer, Leibniz, and other partners, including ESI. This collaboration enables better sharing of resources, handling of complex recruitment processes, lobbying, and other tasks that are best accomplished by a group representing thousands of local scientists, staff, and students.
