Research statement

My research focuses on understanding how the mammalian brainstem detects unexpected auditory events in otherwise repetitive environments – a process known as deviance detection. This ability is essential for survival and communication in both animals and humans. To explore the neural mechanisms underlying deviance detection in the brainstem, I study auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in two distinct auditory specialists: humans and bats.
